To the 2 Old White Women That Called Me a Whore Last Week: Thank You

Dear wannabe Golden Girls,

I know that you know that I heard you last Thursday as you stood behind me talking loudly about how I look. I could clearly hear you saying that I “looked like a whore” and that I was “advertising my body” and should keep it covered for my (mystery) spouse. You even went as far to insinuate that I was in danger to be raped and, since I was wearing an above the knee dress, I probably deserved it.

I just want to say thank you. I am a hard working mother of a 3 year old. I was actually in Target that day bargain hunting for the groceries for my household. I decided to throw on a dress because, I mean, it’s August and I am an adult. I was a little self conscious because I don’t have the same body that I used to have so wearing any dress can feel more like a daring act than a regular daily function.

Thank you for feeling the need to stop and chat about my moral standards. Thank you for pointing out that my dress was on the shorter end. Thank you for being obnoxious, judgmental, and overly critical of someone you don’t even know. Thank you for waddling your ass down a Target aisle yapping about me like 2 broke down chickens in a coop.

Much of my writing is about empowering women, black women specifically, and mothers to be their most authentic selves and to say fuck it to judgey assholes like you two. You two are the reason why I do what I do and without you, my vision might wane and my determination might dissipate. I may think, for a quick second, that my job is unimportant. Women like you remind me of how far we have left to go. You guys keep me on track.

While I didn’t say anything that day in Target, just know that your disgusting comments have lit my fire and I will still wear whatever I want and, if you don’t like it, eh… I don’t care.

Sincerely,

The woman you wish you knew
