The Pressure to be Natural

And why it is all in your head

While scrolling through my Twitter news feed, I saw this short article written on Essence.com about the pressures to go natural since it seems like everyone is doing it.

The thing is, the pressure for black women with perms to go natural is something that they have manifested. Just because your friends are going natural, and natural hair is heavily discussed online, and the community is growing does not mean that the natural mafia is holding a Denman brush to your head telling you it is either natural or death. Your permed, limp (shade), hair is yours to do whatever you want. What it actually seems like is that the pure jubilation that the growing natural community has and the exuding confidence seems to be threatening and like a silent trigger for women with perms to defend their decision.

Listen, you don’t want me telling you why you should go natural and all of that jazz and I most certainly am not interested in hearing about how chemically processing your hair is necessary because you work in corporate America, or because you don’t have time, or because you want your hair to blow in the wind. Permed women feel pressure from themselves. My evolution is not a reflection on your decisions. That silent pressure is really your insecurities seeping through. If you want to perm your hair, I don’t suggest it or think it looks good, but it is your hair and you should do it wholeheartedly. And if your friends are constantly trying to convert you to #teamnatural, tell them to stop and read this. It should help.

Do your permed friends seem like they feel pressured to go natural?
