Natural Hair Wants & Needs

I remember being in grade school when my teacher went over the difference between a want and a need. Before this day in class, I needed everything. Toys, food, Barney, sleep, apple juice– I needed it all. My teacher showed the class a picture of a teddy bear and a picture of a glass of water. She asked the class which one we needed more. As I sat there, no more than 6 years old, I couldn’t grasp how I could possibly need the water more than the teddy bear. If there were a drought, everyone would be bored, but I would have my teddy bear to play with. Who needed water anyway right?

It is the same concept when it comes to buying products and accessories that you think you need when dealing with your natural hair. With every product and accessory promising bouncy, shiny, and pretty, it can be hard to decide what you need, what you want to try, and what you just want to have because it is popular. This falsehood of need is why many women choose to continue to perm their hair rather than go natural because it seems so exhausting and expensive.

There are a few main things that you need. Really, it is just a handful. No need to break open your piggy bank. While it may take some time to figure out what works best for you, especially if you are newly natural, you will get the hang of it and be able to decide what you need or want.

The first thing that you will need is a good moisturizer that can be used in all seasons. Dry hair is in no way sexy hair. You will need a conditioner (deep or leave-in), shampoo (sulfate-free preferably), wide toothed comb, large bristle brush, satin or silk bonnet/scarf, some hair ties, some bobby pins, and gel if you like it. That is it! You do not need a hooded dryer, perm rods, or over priced hair creams, meringues, or smoothies. Don’t misunderstand! Those things are handy sometimes and fun to have. However you do not need them. The hooded dryer is your teddy bear. Its fun, cute, and it can be useful at times. But, if you were stranded on an island full of good looking people, and you could only bring one natural hair item with you to stay fabulous, would it be a hooded dryer?
